We’ve also created this nifty infographic that shows you more keyboard shortcuts (for Mac versions only). The keyboard shortcut to change the keyboard shortcuts is: Command + Alt + Shift + K (what can I say, I love my shortcuts!) I have even made my own keyboard shortcuts for menu commands that I noticed I used a lot, and I recommend you do the same. Listed below are some basic ones that I use 100+ times a day (in addition to the basics that are the same in every program: open/save/copy/paste): Deselect: Command + Shift + A (this makes sure you’re not using a tool when you switch to a new one) Type Tool: T Scale Tool: S Rotate Tool: R Selection Tool (Black Arrow): V Direct Selection Tool (White Arrow): A Lock: Command + 2 Un-lock: Command + Alt + 2 (Great tool for keeping you from moving something unintentionally) Send to Back: Command + Shift + Adjust Artboards: Shift + O Zoom Out: Command + = Zoom In: Command + – Eyedropper Tool: i Knowing the keyboard shortcuts is like taking the highway for designing in Illustrator.

If there’s a tool or tip you really love, please share it with me. However, the main reason I love Illustrator is the freedom of Artboard placement and getting to use the whole canvas space any way I like. While I do use InDesign for multi-page documents and interactive PDFs due to its advantages for these type of projects, Illustrator has made many improvements that also include some InDesign feautres. When I saw the Birth of Venus illustration on the loading screen, I thought, wow, this technology is fancy. Fast forward 10 years later, and I can hardly believe how much this program has improved and grown to change the face of graphic design. My first experience using Illustrator was back in a high school Graphic Design 1 class, on-dare I say it-a PC! I remember the first time I opened the program like it was yesterday. I love Adobe Illustrator, and it's my program of choice for most of my projects at TIS.
